Adaptive Reuse

Scranton, PA

In Scranton, Pennsylvania, Meyer transformed a 71,145-square-foot former nursing home into an inpatient behavioral health facility for Advantage Behavioral Health (ABH), building on a successful history of collaboration with the organization.

Project Details:

Where our previous work with ABH has centered on its established standards and care model, this project offered a new opportunity: to test those standards in an unconventional setting and explore how they translate beyond ground-up construction. Rather than starting from a blank slate, our team approached the building as a starting point, allowing its existing conditions to inform the renovation strategy at every stage. Adaptive reuse brings its own set of constraints, from existing structure and layout to building systems and circulation, and each became a design driver rather than an obstacle. By working with the character and bones of the original building, we reimagined a space once designed for long-term residential care as a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff. The result is a facility that carries forward the ABH model while giving new purpose to an existing structure, demonstrating how thoughtful reuse can meet the specialized demands of behavioral health care and extend the life of a building within the community it serves.
