Meyer transforms a hotel into a new Independent Living community on Long Island
Once an outdated and distressed property, the former Marriott Residence Inn has been transformed into a luxurious, high-end independent living community in the heart of Long Island, NY.
The Meyer Senior Living Studio, along with Capitol Seniors Housing and Chelsea Senior Living, created the vision on how to adaptively reuse an existing hotel into The Residences at Plainview, a welcoming and contemporary community for independent adults 55 and over who seek a complete, carefree lifestyle.
With amenities that set a new standard for luxury in senior living, The Residences offers restaurant-style meals in a beautiful dining room overlooking a hardscaped outdoor patio and pool, a breathtaking two-story open lobby with a full-height fireplace and open access to the nearby bistro, bar and lounge areas. On the second floor, a new amenity-laden main street has been created where residents can gather and enjoy an array of amenities all in one central location.
Focused on resident fitness and wellness, the renovation included a gym, locker rooms, massage rooms, sauna, an indoor pool as well as the addition of a yoga room, beauty salon, barber shop, a home health office and two wellness rooms for on-site consultations. The property is meticulously landscaped with appealing gardens and a sylvan walking path. The Residences offers 116 apartments with studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom options, each with its own walkout patio or porch.

Repurposing certain building types, such as a hotel, can be an attractive alternative to new construction, especially those that are already situated in prime locations. With the increase of distressed hospitality and multi-family properties available more than ever due to the coronavirus pandemic and struggling economy, adaptive reuse is a transformative approach to senior living. Senior living can be a challenging application due to its operational and programmatic constraints, however, hotels, extended stays and apartment buildings offer many of the attributes already in place for a successful repurposing.
